The Buzz on Civics: Get Ready for the 2026 National Civics Bee®

Oct 29, 2025

Calling all Maryland middle schoolers! Do you know how your community works, how laws are made, or what it takes to make a difference? The 2026 National Civics Bee® is your opportunity to learn more about your community, its challenges and showcase a solution.

Each year, the Maryland Chamber Foundation proudly partners with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s The Civic Trust and local chambers across the state to host the National Civics Bee®: Maryland State Finals.

This fun and inspiring competition invites Maryland middle school students (grades 6–8) to share their ideas, sharpen their civics knowledge, and compete for recognition, prizes and the chance to represent Maryland at the National Championship.

How to Participate

Students can enter the competition by submitting answers to four civic-related questions. These questions will challenge students to think about how they can make a positive impact in their community.

Essays are submitted and reviewed at the local level, and top-scoring students are invited to compete in a live quiz-style bee held in their region. The winners then advance to the Maryland State Finals, and our state champion moves on to the National Championship!

Use this link to learn more about the Bee, its guidelines and how to submit your essay. Submissions are open now through Feb. 3, 2026.

Buzz-Worthy Tips

Prep Tip #1: Choose Something You’re Passionate About

Don’t just pick a topic because you think it sounds impressive. Pick one that matters to you. When you write or speak about something you truly care about that passion will shine through and show the judges that you are truly an advocate for your chosen topic. Authentic enthusiasm always stands out.

Performance Tip #1: Start Finding Your Voice Early

Even though competitions are months away, you can start building confidence now. Try explaining your essay idea to a friend, family member, or teacher. Notice how your voice sounds when you talk about something you care about — that’s the same energy that will help you shine later. The more you familiarize yourself with your chosen topic, the more you will have a nice conversational flow. This will undoubtedly be noticed by and impress the judges.
