Boosting Maryland’s Future Economy through Manufacturing

Sep 17, 2025

The Regional Manufacturing Institute of Maryland (RMI) and the Maryland Chamber of Commerce proudly announce the launch of Voices for Manufacturing — a collaborative initiative designed to illuminate the vital role of manufacturing in strengthening Maryland’s communities, economy and future.

As part of this effort, we are convening 13 Let’s Talk: Community Conversation events — a statewide series bringing together manufacturers and state legislators between Sept. 29–Nov. 25. These invitation-only gatherings will highlight manufacturing’s value and impact while building relationships that can help shape a stronger economic future for Maryland.

Why it Matters

“By connecting policymakers directly with manufacturers, we’re paving the way for understanding and new opportunities.” —Dr. Mike Galiazzo, President, RMI

“Bringing public officials and manufacturers face-to-face is key to creating a shared vision for Maryland manufacturing.” —Mary Kane, President & CEO, Maryland Chamber

State leaders, including Senate President Bill Ferguson, House Speaker Adrienne Jones, Comptroller Brooke Lierman and Maryland Commerce Secretary Harry Coker, have already voiced strong support for this first-of-its-kind initiative.

“The manufacturing industry has long been the backbone of the Maryland economy by providing family sustaining careers while being vital links in worldwide supply chains and product development. As technology changes, advanced manufacturing in Maryland offers new and impactful ways for manufacturers to grow and build the State’s economy. The Voices for Manufacturing Community Conversations series offers an excellent opportunity to highlight how Maryland manufacturers are innovating and growing in the face of economic uncertainty.” —Bill Ferguson, Maryland Senate President

"Maryland’s manufacturing industry is not just part of our economic past — it’s central to our future. By investing in innovation, workforce development, and advanced technologies, we’re building a stronger, more resilient manufacturing sector that creates good-paying jobs and keeps our state competitive on the global stage. Community Conversations are a central part of that effort and will help ensure Maryland continues to be a leader in innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology development." —Adrienne Jones, Maryland House Speaker

"The future of Maryland's manufacturing sector depends on building bridges between the factory floor and Annapolis. When business owners share their real-world challenges and policymakers listen with open minds, we can create an environment where innovation thrives, jobs multiply and communities prosper. Manufacturing isn't just about making products. It also creates opportunity, and our opportunities and economy grow when we work together." —Brooke Lierman, Maryland Comptroller

“Maryland has a long, proud legacy of manufacturing, from steel production to shipbuilding to modern medical devices and more. This history gives us a strong foundation on which to build future economic growth, bring wealth to Maryland families, create jobs and opportunities, and strengthen our communities. This new partnership between the public and private sectors is a victory for manufacturing and a huge win for Maryland.” —Harry Coker, Maryland Department of Commerce Secretary

What's Next

  • Following the conversations, manufacturers will connect with their state-elected officials to encourage facility visits and advocacy in Annapolis
  • On Dec. 9, a Voices for Manufacturing breakfast event will share outcomes from the conversations and preview the 2026 legislative session

Please note: Community Conversations are limited to Maryland manufacturers, state and local legislators, and invited guests.
