Bowie State and UMD diversify educational research

(BOWIE, Md. — September 26, 2017) Diversity in educational research is lacking. But two universities in Maryland have teamed up, ready to rise to the occasion.

Research Institute for Scholars in Education, a partnership between Bowie State University and the University of Maryland will prepare 60 pre-doctoral fellows with the skills needed for doctoral study related to language and literacy for high-need students.

“[The mission of RISE is] to promote and provide opportunities and skills needed to succeed on the doctoral level,” Bowie State Professor William Drakeford, Ph.D., said.

There is a need for increased diversity in educational research, according to Drakeford. Targeted at fellows from underrepresented groups, RISE will offer each cohort a six-week paid summer research seminar at their respective universities, and two semester-long, paid research experiences.

“Diversity [in educational research] provides a level perspective for future scholars who may be interested in pursuing research at its highest level," Drakeford said.

Drakeford, a leader of this initiative, worked closely with colleague Susan De La Paz, Ph.D., from the University of Maryland, who felt strongly about a collaboration with Bowie State.

Through this program, which is funded by a $1.1 million U.S. Department of Education grant, Drakeford hopes to recruit and train underrepresented scholars who will make positive impacts within the field.

“It is my goal to produce scholars that will eventually go on to gain their Ph.D.s and make valuable contributions," Drakeford said.
