Bill Sponsor(s): Senators Pugh, Conway, Della, Exum, Gladden

Subject: Environment & Energy

Committee:FIN

Bill Summary: Prohibiting the manufacture, sale, offer for sale, importation, or distribution of specified lead-containing children's products or lead-adulterated consumable products; providing that specified provisions of the Act do not apply to specified electronic devices; authorizing an agent of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to enter specified factories, warehouses, and establishments to inspect specified products at any reasonable time; etc.

Chamber Position: Oppose

Position Summary: While the Chamber is supportive of efforts to protect children from lead exposure, the bill displays bad public policy and should not be implemented on a Maryland-only basis. The penalties included in the bill are onerous, especlally if the establishment does not know in advance if the product contains lead.
