Bill Summary: This bill would prohibit businesses from transmitting personal information to a third party for compensation and make a violation of the bill an Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practice, including a private cause of action. State agencies would also have been prohibited from selling personal information for purposes of a mailing list.

History: The bill is the same as HB 1349 of 2006, which was opposed by the MD Chamber and died without a vote in ECM. In 2007 HB 210 was withdrawn by the sponsor.

Position Summary: The MD Chamber opposes this bill because it would prohibit many necessary business transactions that are required to conduct commerce on a daily basis.
