Maryland, 8 other states move to further reduce carbon emissions

Maryland joins eight other states - Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont - in plans to further reduce carbon pollution caps.

The states are part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which sets carbon dioxide pollution caps in the Northeast. The group announced Thursday plans to reduce the cap by 30 percent between 2020 and 2030.

The current program, reducing the total emissions cap 2.5 percent each year until 2020, will continue. The plan announced Thursday establishes the reductions for the following 10 years.
