Position: Director of Strategic Partnerships (full-time)

The director of strategic partnerships will drive strategic business development initiatives with leading Maryland companies to enhance relevance, reach and revenue for our organization. While the primary focus of the role will be strategic partnerships, this position will also be responsible for projects in the area of corporate development. This position will report to the president & CEO.

This role is a critical position that will help the Maryland Chamber of Commerce develop important relationships and opportunities with captains of industry, education, government and elected officials throughout the state. The DSP will help refine the MDCC’s overall partnership strategy working closely with the EVP, Government Affairs, Communication and Marketing, and Member Services teams. With the strategy defined, this individual will build a pipeline of key relationships utilizing relational sales techniques with partners that include negotiating sales, activating, executing and managing partnership relationships.


• Use a systematic approach to establish deep relationships with strategic partners including understanding their strategy, key decision-makers, organizational structure, advocacy needs and industry competitiveness challenges

• Understand the competitive landscape and identify strategic opportunities and threats

• Maintain pipeline of new partnership opportunities designed to drive relevance, reach and revenue for MDCC

• Qualify, structure, negotiate, close, and manage strategic partnerships that will drive membership engagement, revenue, and new customer acquisition

• Work with membership, marketing, special event and government affairs to evaluate and execute strategic partnership opportunities

• Maintain active relationships with MDCC’s key partners reinforcing our leadership position in the market, proactively addressing business issues and identifying ways to maximize value for both parties

• Drive engagement plans for long-term success

• Explore relationships with existing partners by uncovering expansion opportunities, developing and driving strategies to upsell

• Identify and track relevant metrics of success and periodically report to the leadership team on status


• 8+ years of experience working in a chamber of commerce or association with a business development emphasis

• Ability to influence and build relationships with people across all levels and organizations internally and externally

• Extensive experience formulating a partnership vision, strategy, and execution plan

• Strong organization skills and the ability to create timelines and meet deadlines 

• Extensive statewide industry contacts and ability to navigate political landscape; must be wired to be the face of MDCC in the community and beyond

• Proven experience starting from scratch to develop, negotiate and structure complex deals


• Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with an ability to interact effectively with business development leaders, executives, higher education, government and elected officials  

• Creative, critical and solution-first thinker with customer service mentality

• Expert relational sales capabilities

• Able to handle multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment, completing tasks with tight timelines

• Fun to work with, excellent at teamwork and cross group collaboration

• Great at execution: results-driven, detail-oriented, organized self-starter

Internships at the Maryland Chamber of Commerce

Position: Event Planning and Promotion

Area of Focus: Event Planning and Promotion

Compensation: Paid 

Position Dates: Flexible

Hours: 2-3 days a week, 17-22 hours per week. Flexible.

Prerequisites: Student currently enrolled in a baccalaureate or graduate level program in marketing, communications, business, hospitality management or other related field.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research, make site visits (with Chamber staff), and find resources to help staff make decisions about event possibilities
  • Assist in identifying event opportunities and generating interest
  • Works closely with other staff members in promoting Chamber events to target audiences
  • Assists in preparing a variety of publications, materials, and programs for events
  • Assists in maintaining the Chamber website ensuring that event and program updates are made on a timely basis
  • Attends signature events
  • Assists on the “day of” in set-up, preparation, hosting registration table and troubleshooting
  • May be asked to assist with social media, pre-and post-event coverage
  • Assist with event registration 
  • Aid in database management

Skills Required

  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, proof reading skills, and speaking
  • Excellent organization skills and experience with project management
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects and work assignments from a variety of staff and volunteers 
  • Ability to accomplish projects with little supervision
  • Fantastic customer service ethic and high expectations for quality

Position: Government Affairs Intern

Area of Focus: Government Affairs

Compensation: Paid

Position Dates: Immediately/ASAP

Hours: 2-3 days a week, 17-22 hours per week. Flexible.

Prerequisites: Student currently enrolled in a baccalaureate or graduate level program in marketing, communications, business, hospitality management or other related field.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Providing administrative support to the lobbying team in order to provide timely and accurate reports, position papers, testimony, fax/emailing of legislative-related documents and correspondence to legislators, members and other constituency groups;

Supporting the Legislative, and other policy committees of the Maryland Chamber with regard to preparing, updating, and maintaining committee lists, agendas, meeting notices, RSVPs, materials and correspondence;

Other duties as assigned.

Aid in database management


Skills Required:

Outstanding computer skills, including database management

Good writing skills as well as a strong ability to work within strict timelines

A professional demeanor coupled with a good work ethic.

A general understanding of the legislative process is preferred.
